Released from prison, Lang returns to his hometown in northwest China. As part of a dog patrol tasked with cleaning up stray dogs ahead of the 2008 Olympics, he bonds with a black stray. The two lonely souls embark on a new journey together. Eddie Peng [director] has developed such a strong bond with Xin, the dog featured in the film, that he adopts him after filming. A pack of stray dogs rushes in, scaring the driver and causing the bus to overturn. This leads to Lang, an ex-convict who was once a popular motorcycle stuntman, now returning to his hometown after serving 10 years in prison for killing the nephew of a local gangster. After a few conversations with the police, the title card appears and the magic of Black Dog begins. A poetic and minimalist film about healing and moving on, depicted through friendship, connection, the spiritual bond between a man and a dog. The man is Lang, and the dog is a notoriously thin black dog who terrorizes the city. Rumor has it that the black dog carries rabies, defending his territory by attacking walls and biting people, which is why everyone wants to catch him. Two lost souls, alienated from the society around them. Two black sheep who don’t fit in. Lang is marginalized because of his “murderer” past, and the black dog is also an outsider among the other homeless people because he is the biggest, strongest, fastest and most aggressive of all dogs. One of Guan Hu’s main messages in Black Dog is that no animal is evil. People can be, but dogs are not. Stray dogs are violent because they are constantly afraid and trying to survive in a developing environment where they don’t belong. Lang is like a stray dog. He is not like the others. He only says a few words throughout the film because he is very quiet and introverted. Like the black dog, he is trying to make a life in a city that is undergoing modernization. After his time in prison, Lang has changed, and so has the city and the people he once knew. So now he doesn’t speak, he just exists and goes with the flow. That’s why Lang and the black dog are so perfect for each other and that’s why they instantly connect – they are both just trying to survive in a world they no longer know, a world that no longer wants them. “Black Dog” takes place during a crucial time for China, a time of urbanization and change. And this small town is deeply affected. Most of its inhabitants have fled, leaving their dogs behind, who now roam freely in the streets and deserts. The zoo runs out of money to keep the animals, so they are also released into the desert. The circus tries to survive, but business is failing. The old is torn down to make way for the new, which is a clever parallel to the ending of the film, when the black dog dies but leaves behind a new generation of black puppies. The cinematography of Black Dog is amazing, and Guan Hu has embraced the new “slow cinema.” The Chinese Bi Gan style, which made me fall in love with the film almost instantly. The long panoramic views of beautiful landscapes, the calm motorcycle riding scenes, and the slow walks along dusty roads and abandoned rural villages are complemented by such a lonely atmosphere as Lang and the black dog calmly glide through the desert’s stray dogs and the sun. The eclipse sequence, when the zoo’s tiger freely roams the city streets, are two of my favorites of the whole year. And the final shot of Black Dog is so beautiful and meaningful. Through his canine companion, Lang finally learns to live despite his dark past, and how to find happiness in the suffering of life.
